Sankranti - Celebration of harvest.

Did you fly kites today? Did you stuff your mouth with delicious til laddoos and deep fried pakodas? Are your ears hurting with all the music competition on your terrace from your friendly neighborhood?

If the answer to all the questions above were yes by you, then you had a great day today celebrating Sankranti. Just like you, I did all these things and can proudly call it a day well spent.

The festival of Sankranti is all about celebrating the harvest season of the year marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days. Makar Sankranti is observed with social festivities such as colorful decorations, fairs, dances, kite flying, bonfires, feasts and children going house to house, singing and asking for treats in some areas.

Since I am a big fan of traditions, I tried to include all the elements of the festival and succeeded in doing so with the help of my family and friends.

The day started by visiting the nearby area and sharing treats with the kids and women there. It felt like a big group hug and the smiles on all of our faces sharing the moment felt like melted chocolate. My family and I were so enthusiastic that we ended up spending better half of the day talking to the families there. But did you really think that the kids will stay around long after getting their treats? They all scurried away to fly their kites and compete with each other as the day was demanded so.

We followed suit soon after. The sun was in all its might and the breeze was determined to help us fly our kites to the highest tops as much as possible. There was loud music from all the terraces around us. The families had all come up in big groups to enjoy the festivities with sweets, treats and kites of all shapes, colors and sizes.

There was unintelligible chatter, lessons on flying kites, big hauls when someone won a kite match and lots and lots of laughter. The day is still ringing in my ears while I sit and write about it. I hope you, the reader, too had a great day today. Even if you did not do all things written here, I hope you feel the laughter in the air and let it sink into your hearts. So long as we chase the little happy moments, we can smile from ear to ear all the time (Even if sometimes you look like a crazy person :)).

P.S: All safety protocols along with masks and sanitizers were used at all times and only removed for pictures.
